Our Strategy
Dealing with the huge amount of waste generated in Surrey homes is the challenging and costly job undertaken by members of the Surrey Environment Partnership.
Surrey’s plan for waste management (known as the Joint Municipal Waste Management Strategy) outlines how we do it and on a regular basis we take a fresh look at the strategy and update it. This ensures we’re continuing to manage Surrey’s waste in the best, most cost-effective way.
Following a consultation with residents, a revised strategy (first published in 2006) was adopted by the partnership in December 2014 and then adopted by Surrey County Council and all 11 district and borough councils in the county in 2015.
The strategy is due to be reviewed again, but the partnership needs to ensure it aligns with the new measures that are expected to come in during 2024 and 2025 as part of the new national resources and waste strategy. To bridge the gap between our existing out-of-date strategy and further clarity from the Government, SEP 2025 has been developed.
This interim plan is designed to reflect the vision of SEP and provide clear strategic direction for the partnership for the next three years to 2025 and a longer-term vision that will allow SEP to continue to follow the waste hierarchy and work towards zero waste. SEP 2025 can be read below and is currently being considered for adoption by SEP’s 12 partner authorities. It is anticipated that this process will be completed by 1 April 2023.
